The itinerary for Thursday: Aerial Runway (zip wire), Low Ropes and the Leap of Faith, Fire Lighting and a Campfire.

The Low Ropes activity was another obstacle course but this time mainly consisting of - you guessed it - ropes. This specific activity involved a great deal of teamwork as we had to complete certain obstacles in pairs. One particular obstacle had one horizontal log on a hinge a few feet from the ground, attached to a wooden frame. The log had a rope wrapped around it and it swung over a 6 foot patch of dirt. Our task was to get everybody in the team from one end of the patch, to the other without touching the ground or physically pushing the log to make it swing. We figured out that if we tugged on one side of the rope that was wrapped around the log, it would swing one way and if you tugged on the other side, the log would swing the other. We were able to complete this task by sitting on the horizontal log in pairs, one person pulling one side of the rope and the other hitching a lift and being dropped off at the other side.

The Campfire wasn’t an activity that required any sort of team work or skill but it was a night of fun and talking to other members of the whole NCS family, including those from the other 2 groups. The night was full of laughter, roasting marshmallows and crazy campfire songs and games. We also spent hours singing beautiful tunes played on a borrowed guitar - it turned out a good handful of our NCS family are musically talented than any of use realised!

Staying at the Manor were also some Spanish and Italian students who had come to England on a trip to improve their English and have fun! After talking to them and finding out more about them, we realised that they were actually the same age as us. It was really interesting finding out more about the Spanish and Italian cultures, and from talking to them for hours on end, many people from the NCS family are keeping in contact with them!

Through an unspoken vote, I can fairly say that the Campfire night was clearly the best night of our trip so far. We felt more at home and part of a real family. It became insane to think that only 3 days before that night, the majority of us were complete strangers. I know, I’m sounding sappy now so I’ll move on. But it really was the best night...
